The first urgent care centers opened in the 1970s. Since then, there are approximately 10,000 centers. Much of the growth of these centers has been fueled by the significant savings that urgent care centers provide over the care in a hospital emergency department. Urgent Care Centers provide a public service, in that; they reduce traffic and overcrowding in Emergency Rooms thereby, allowing them to focus mainly on patients with life-threatening conditions. Additionally, Urgent Care Centers reduce wait times for patients as well as health care costs, as it is cheaper to treat a patient in a clinic than it would be if the service were provided in a hospital setting.
